Cloud Types/Formations Flashcards
Frost occurs when DB temps fall to 0 ‘C, occurs on
Clear nights when IR is emitted from the ground, cooling it quickly.
Fog is cloud at the ground, formed when
Air is chilled at the surface.
ELR - Temp drops by 6 ‘C for every 1km ascended, up to about 10 km. the ELR is
6 ‘C km -1
If the ELR is greater than the SALR the conditions are
Unstable and convection can take place.
Clouds are formed when moist air is cooled to reach saturation,
Minute water droplets are formed from further cooling, which condense to form a cloud.
Minute water droplets are commonly formed by ascent when
Air cools adiabatically.
Adiabatically:
Without heat exchange - Air parcel must be expanding, therefore the temp decreases.
If the air parcel shrinks then
Temp would increase.
