Cloud Formations Flashcards
Cirrus Clouds
Delicate, wispy clouds of ice crystals forming at high levels around rocky or metallic dust when warm, dry air rises & deposits water vapour
Cumulus Clouds
Vertically developing heaps of liquid water droplets forming at low levels when warm air ascends
Stratus Clouds
Horizontally developing sheets of liquid water droplets forming at low levels due to water vapour uplift
Altocumulus Clouds
Vertically developing shaded wisps of water droplets forming at mid levels from water droplets when warm air ascends, often indicating settles weather
Altostratus Clouds
Horizontally developing featureless sheets of water droplets & thin ice crystals forming at mid levels when layers of cirrostratus clouds descend as a warm front approaches, uplifting water vapour. Sometimes translucent
Cirrocumulus Clouds
White wisps of ice crystals forming at high levels when warm air ascends
Cirrostratus Clouds
Wide, transparent sheets of ice crystals forming at high levels from water vapour uplift
Stratocumulus Clouds
White to dark clumps of water droplets forming at low levels when marine air condenses water droplets
Cumulonimbus Clouds
Rain-producing heaps forming at any height over large areas from ascending warm air, indicating a thunderstorm
Nimbostratus Clouds
Flat, rain-producing sheets forming from slowly rising warm air encountering colder air
