A

A

A

What can lists do

A

Lists can indicate the amount of something or how long something takes. A list of verbs, for example, might imply a lot of action.
E.g. I stopped, I stumbled and ran until I couldn’t breathe

What does repetition do

A

Repetition usually emphasises something, but you have to be able to explain WHAT it emphasises.
E.g. The sea, the sea, the beautiful sea

What is a climax

A

There will be a sense of progress in the sentence, feeling as if it is leading to something and finishing with the most powerful point
E.g. He pulled the life, saw its blade glint in the sun, then he plunged it in her heart

What does an anti-climax do

A

There will be a sameness of progress in the sentence, feeling as if it is leading to something and yet finishing with the least important/dramatic point
E.g. He pulled the knife, saw its blade glint in the sun, then he reached for a roll and butter

What does parenthesis do

A
  1. This is when there is EXTRA INFORMATION enclosed by a pair of commas, brackets or dashes
  2. It may affect the tone of a sentence by adding, for example, humour
  3. It may made the meaning of something clearer with the extra detail
  4. If parenthesis is left out it would leave something missing from the sentence

What are inverted commas used for

A

These are used for quotes and direct speech (dialogue). They can also show when words are being used in an unusual way or unfamiliar
E.g. She definitely is “special”

What are dashes used for

A

Can be used in the same way as a colon can also be used to show PARENTHESIS
(When there are 2)

What is inversion

A

This is when the normal word order of a sentence is revered or changed. It is usually used to emphasis a particular word or part of a sentence.
E.g. Back we went to school
The pain I could not take!
