cloning Flashcards
what is asexual reproduction
an offspring identical to its parent (only one parent)
what are the three types of natural cloning
budding, layering, propagation by cutting
what is budding
new individual develops from a protrusion that eventually detaches itself from the parent
what is layering
roots develop from a branch in contact with the ground. it detached itself and becomes a new individual
what is propagation by cutting
a new individual is formed from a seperated section of the plant (is only natural if the separation it not done by human)
what is artificial plan cloning
anything that is accomplished through human intervention
what are the steps to animal cloning (4)
- remove full DNA from the cell of individual
- take ovum from another individual & remove nucleus
- combine full DNA and ovum
- implant embryo into uterus of surrogate mother
what are the 2 types of human cloning
reproductive, therapeutic
what is reproductive cloning
cloning technique to obtain a new individual genetically identical to the one being cloned
what is therapeutic cloning
cloning technique to obtain tissues or organs genetically identical to those of a person in need of a transplant of medical grafting
what is molecular cloning
production of multiple copies of the same defective gene to study genetic illness
