Yarning is an informal conversation that is culturally friendly and recognised by Aboriginal people as a means to talk about something/someone or provide and receive information
Define clinical yarning
Clinical yarning is a simple, person-centred framework that is conversational, relaxed, open-ended style of communication which privileges storying as a way to understand a patients health issue within the context of their life. It is culturally congruent with Aboriginal ways of communicating.

What is a social yarn?
- relationship building stage
- trust is developing
- getting to know you or catching up stage
- informal & often unstructured > guided by the topic of discussion
- can include gossip, news, humour, advice
What are the skills that assist social yarning?
- exchanging information
- sharing life/cultural experiences
- finding and identifying common ground
- being friendly, open, & interested
- using humour
- using appropriate non-verbal behaviours
What is a diagnostic yarn?
- yarn with a purpose
- find out the clients health story
- interpret the story through bio-medical/psycho-social lens > feedback to client
- assist client to understand their situation or medical condition
What skills can assist diagnostic yarning?
- feedback/clarify what patient has told you
- use active listening
- invite questions/clarification
- find & use metaphors to explain complex medical issues
- explain medical jargon
