What is syphilis?
- a bacterial infection usually spread by sexual contact
How does Syphilis initially present?
- small sores around genitals or bottom
- a rash (usually on your hands or feet) and white patches in the mouth
What is the Venereal Diseases Regulations 1916 act?
- act imposed on NHS
- under no obligation to share info about people with venereal (sexual interacts) disease
When attending a Genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic what are the 5 major differences between a GUM clinic and a GP?

What is dyspareunia?
- pain during sexual intercourse
What is Dysuria?
- pain when urinating
What are some basic reasons why a sexual medical history is required?
- clinical presentation
- assess risk of STI/HIV
- abnormal menstrual cycle
- determine specimens that need collecting
- new sexual partner
- sex worker (vaccination requirements)
If we suspect a patient with HIV, what other conditions may be associated?
- TB
- lymphoma
- infection
- weight loss
In a patient with cardiac problems and/or diabetes, what other symptoms may we see sexually?
