What is the DSM?
- Diagnostic statistical manual
* Published by the American Psychological Association (1952)

What does the DSM do?
- Groups systems together into syndromes which relate to specific mental health conditions and gives a reliable list of symptoms used to diagnose illnesses
- Criteria to help psychiatrists around the world to make diagnosis i.e show 5 to 9 items from the list of symptoms for a two week period.

What are examples of “disorder areas”?
- Pyschotic disorders e.g schizophrenia
- Anxiety disorders e.g phobias
- Mood disorders e.g bi-polar
- Samatoform disorders e.g hypochondriasis
- Impulse control disorders e.g kleptomania

The symptoms/characteristics

What are diagnostic features?
A discription of the disorder talking about what it is like/what experience people may have

What are associated features?
Things linked to the disorder but not directly a symptom e.g lack of energy caused by not eating

What is developing and course?
How we see it developing from initial symptoms onwards

What are risk factors?
Things which make you more likely to get it

What is differential diagnosis?
The differences between it and similar illnesses

What is comorbidity?
What other illnesses are common with this one
