Clinical Procedures /exam review Flashcards
Benign Tumor
- Grow slowly
- Encapsulated
- Differentiated
- Don’t spread
Malignant Tumor
- Multiply rapidly
- Invasive and infiltrative
- Undifferentiated
- Metastasize
Grade of Tumor
degree of maturity or differentiation under the microscope, grade 1-very well differentiated, grade 2 and 3 are intermediate in appearance, moderate or poor differentiated, grade 4 undifferentiated and difficult to recognized.
Stage of tumor (cancer)
extent of spread of tumor in the body.
0-undetectable and 1,2,3, and 4 mean a progressive increase in size or involvement.
Debulking procedure
may be used to remove as much of primary tumor mass as possible
Adjuvant (assisting) radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy
after removal of primary tumor to prevent recurrence at distant sites
scirrhous
densely pack tumor, due to dense band of fibrous tissue; commonly found in breast or stomach cancer.
fulguration
destruction of tissue by electric sparks generated by a high -frequency current.
inherited cancer
is transmitted by defect DNA of the egg or sperm cells. ex. are in the retina of the eye(Retinoblastoma ) colon (adenomatous polyposis coli sindrome), breast and kidney cancer.
polypoid
growths that form projections extending outward from a base. sessile polypoid tumor extend from a stem or stalk. Both benign and malign tumors of the colon may grow as polyps.
scattering of x-ray
scattering occurs when x-Ray come into contact with any material.Greater scatter occurs with dense objects and less scatter with those object that are radiolucent.
Thallium Scan
Thallium-201 (T-201)is injected intravenously to evaluate myocardial perfusion.
