Clinical Lab Testing -- Urinalysis Flashcards
What type of urine specimen is preferred for a urinalysis?
Mid-stream clean and catch
When performing a clean catch, the patient must clean the outside of what?
Urethra
Within what period should urine be examined after collection?
Within 1 hr or refrigerate 4-6 degrees centigrade up to 8 hrs.
Failure to examine under specimen handling could cause inaccurate results, which are?
- Bacteria goes up
- glucose level decrease
- pH levels increases
- Ketones level decrease
- Decomposition of casts
pH reagent in the urine
Measures acidity or alkalinity of the urine
Protein Reagent
Detects the protein in the urine (proteinuria).
Seen in renal disease & UTI.
Ketones Reagent
Excreted as a byproduct of fatty acid metabolism (ketonuria). Seen in diabetics.
Bilirubin Reagent
Biproduct of hemoglobin breakdown.
Seen in liver disease and bile duct obstruction.
Blood Reagent
Detects the presence of blood in the urine (hematuria).
Can indicate infection, trauma, or bleeding of the kidneys.
Urobilinogen Reagent
Is a product of bilirubin degradation.
Elevated in presence of hepatic and/or hemolytic disease.
Nitrite Reagent in the urine
Produced by gram-negative bacteria converting nitrate to nitrite. Can indicate infection if present in fresh specimen. Old specimen possible contamination
Leukocyte Esterase Reagent in the urine
Produced by white blood cells in urine (pyuria).
Can indicate UTI.
