Clinical Indications Flashcards
Linear fractures
Breaks in a bone that follow a straight line, usually without displacement of the bone.
Depressed fractures
Fractures where a portion of the bone is pushed inward, often seen in skull fractures.
Basal skull fractures
Fractures at the base of the skull, typically involving the bones around the brainstem.
Metastases
Cancerous cells that spread from one part of the body to another, forming secondary tumors.
Osteolytic lesions
areas of bone that are destroyed or eroded, often due to diseases like cancer.
Osteoblastic lesions
Abnormal bone growth, where the bone becomes denser and forms new, excessive bone tissue.
Combination osteolytic and osteoblastic lesions
Bone lesions that involve both destruction (osteolytic) and excessive growth (osteoblastic).
Acoustic neuroma
A benign tumor that grows on the nerve responsible for hearing and balance, located near the ear.
Cholesteatoma
An abnormal skin growth in the middle ear that can cause hearing loss and damage to surrounding structures.
Otosclerosis
A condition where abnormal bone growth in the middle ear leads to hearing loss.
Contra-coup fracture
A fracture that occurs on the opposite side of the impact, often due to brain movement inside the skull after trauma.
