CLINICAL INDICATIONS Flashcards
is a common painful disorder of the wrist and hand that results from compression of the median nerve as it passes through the center of the wrist.
CARPAL TUNNEL SYDROME
refers to accumulated fluid (synovial or hemorrhagic) in the joint cavity.
JOINT EFFUSION
refers to a sprain or tear of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb, near the MCP joint of the hyperextended thumb.
SKIER’S THUMB
Hereditary form of arthritis where uric acid is deposited in joints.
GOUT
Form of arthritis marked by progressive cartilage deterioration in synovial joints and vertebrae.
OSTEOARTHRITIS OR DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE
(Luxation) occurs when the bone is displaced from a joint, or when the articular contact of bones that make up a joint is completely lost.
DISLOCATION
Partial dislocation.
SUBLUXATION
s a forced wrenching or twisting of a joint that results in a partial rupture or tearing of supporting ligaments, without dislocation.
SPRAIN
Is a break in the structure of bone caused by a force (direct or indirect).
FRACTURE
the broken ends of the bone protrude through skin. Conversely, a closed (simple) fracture does not break the skin
OPEN (COMPOUND) FRACTURE
the bone is splintered, crushed, or broken into pieces at the site of impact, and smaller bone fragments lie in between the two fragments
COMMINUTED FRACTURE
one end of the fractured bone is forcefully driven into the interior of the other
IMPACTED FRACTURE
also known as Hickory or Willow Stick fracture
GREENSTICK FRACTURE
Transverse fracture that extends through the metacarpal neck.
- most commonly seen in the 5th metacarpal.
BOXER’S FRACTURE
Transverse fracture of the distal radius in which the distal fragment is displaced posteriorly.
COLLE’S FRACTURE
Reverse of Colles’
fracture, or transverse fracture of the distal radius with the distal fragment displaced anteriorly.
SMITH’S FRACTURE (GOYRAND FRACTURE)
Fracture and dislocation of the posterior lip of the distal radius involving the wrist joint.
BARTON’S FRACTURE
Fracture of the base of the 1st metacarpal bone, extending into the carpometacarpal joint, complicated by subluxation with some posterior displacement.
BENNETTE’S FRACTURE
is a three part or comminuted intra-articular fracture-dislocation of the base of thumb (proximal 1st metacarpal).
ROLANDO FRACTURE
fracture of the radial shaft which is associated with dislocation of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ).
GALEAZZI FRACTURE
comprise of a fracture of the ulnar shaft and dislocation of the radial head.
MONTEGGIA FRACTURE
are intraarticular fracture of the radial styloid process.
CHAUFFER FRACTURES (HUTCHINSON’S FRACTURES OR BACKFIRE FRACTURES)
dislocations comprise of a comminuted fracture of the radial head accompanied by dislocation of the distal radio-ulnar joint.
ESSEX-LOPRESTI FRACTURE
This fracture of the distal phalanx is caused by a ball striking the end of an extended finger.
BASEBALL (MALLET) FRACTURE
This comminuted fracture of the distal phalanx may be caused by a crushing blow to the distal finger or thumb.
TUFT/ BURST FRACTURE
