Clinical chemistry CPC Flashcards
Which can cause depression, hypo- or hypercalcaemia?
Hypercalcaemia
What is a Smith’s fracture?
How is it caused?
How is it managed?
Posterior displacement of the radius (i.e. radius towards the BACK of the hand)
Falling on a flexed wrist
Treated with manipulation under anaesthesia (MUA) and plaster
What is a Colle’s fracture?
How is it caused?
Anterior displacement of the radius (i.e. radius towards the PALM of the hand)
Falling on an extended wrist
What is a Pott’s fracture?
Ankle fracture involving both tibia and fibula
What is the PTH level in
a) Sarcoid
b) Cancer
c) Primary HPT
Sarcoid: PTH suppression/low (as produces lots of calcium which suppresses PTH)
Cancer: PTH high (endogenous production) from PTHrP or invading bone cancer
1st HPT: PTH normal/high (despite hypercalcaemia)
What is band keratopathy?
Calcium deposition across the front of the eye
Caused by chronic hypercalcaemia
What electrolyte disturbance can MEN 1 or 2 present with?
Hypercalcaemia
