what are phobias?

A

an irrational, persistent and extreme fear of something, they are classed as anxiety disorders

dsm-5 categorisation of phobias

A

specific phobias = fear of a specific object in the environment, e.g. spiders. split into animal, injury, situational and natural phobias

social phobias = anxiety in social situations, e.g. when giving a speech. split into performance, interaction and generalised phobias

agoraphobia = fear of open or public spaces, can be caused by simple and/or social phobias, e.g. the fear of contamination (mysophobia) could cause a fear of public spaces

what is OCD?

A
  • anxiety disorder characterised by obsessive thoughts and repetitive compulsive behaviours
  • obsessions are reoccurring and persistent thoughts, compulsions are repetitive behaviours
  • 70% of sufferers experience both, 20% just obsessions and 10% just compulsions
