Clinical Aspects of Adhesion Flashcards
What effect does sealant have on the bacteria in a carious tooth?
Huge reduction in total anaerobic/aerobic count
What is the concept of wet bonding?
Having a wet surface pre primer:
If you keep the surface wet using a hydrophilic primer then the material will mix with wet surface and penetrate better into dentine.
A dry surface will result in the collagen network collapsing and forming an impenetrable mass:
What does the air inhibted layer form a bond between in restorations?
Resin and composite.
What does the hybrid layer consist of in relation to the dentine and resin?
The intertubular dentine is infiltrated with resin.
What does the hybrid layer consist of in relation to the dentine and resin?
The intertubular dentine is infiltrated with resin.
What is MMP secreted by and what can it do to the adhesive?
- Secreted by collagen and bacteria.
- Leads to breakdown of adhesive interface as collagen itself is dissolved away
What can activate MMP?
- Proteinases
- Chemical agents
- Mildly acidogenic conditions.
How does micro-tensile bond testing work?
- Crown cut off
- Composite placed on top.
- Tooth sectioned
- Then the tooth is put into beams
- These beams are then pulled apart to test bond strength in a small area:
Give 2 examples of MMP inhibitors.
- GM6001
- BB94
With what bond does using MMP inhibtors increase the mean micro-tensile strength.
G-Bond: type 4
What is the setting reaction that occurs in GIC?
Acid base reaction of poly-acrylic acid/alumino-silicate glass.
Where does the ionic exchange occurs between GIC and the tooth?
Occurs between the glass particles in GIC and the matrix in the tooth.
When does GIC fully mature into a tooth?
6 months
How does biodentine set on a tooth?
Hydration reaction:
Give 2 positives of the ions and high pH formed by biodentine on a tooth.
Good at mineralisation
Good at pulp stimulation
