Semi rigid form of connective tissue formed by a matrix of cartilaginous fibres

Body’s first line of defence
An attempt to restore homeostasis
It prompts repair of damaged tissue
It is a normal and necessary pre requisite for healing

- mechanical irritation eg trauma
