why is asthma relevant to perio

gum disease causes high blood sugar levels, so may cause/ worsen diabetes
therefore people with (esp uncontrolled) diabetes often have more severe periodontal disease
why is smoking relevant to perio
- smokers have more anaerobic, gram -ve bacteria in pockets
- nicotine causes vasoconstriction –> less bleeding and inflammation–> disease masking
- less T lymphocytes –> poor healing
- impairment of neutrophils (phagocytosis, chemotaxis) –> poor healing
why can honey have good and bad effects in the mouth?
it is an extrinsic sugar so is cariogenic, but has antibacterial properties so may prevent action of cariogenic or periodontal disease- related pathogens
