Climate Change in Asia Flashcards
A Monsoon is
Monsoon = a seasonal reversals of wind direction, caused by
temperature differences between the land and sea.
Summer monsoon supplies
Summer monsoon supplies up to 90% of the precipitation for
the area from April to September. Supplied from South Pacific via
SE winds.
Monsoon is driven by
Driven by strong pressure gradients caused by summer heating
of the Asian landscape, producing ascending air and high level
westerly air flow towards the S Pacific.
• These air masses cool over the Pacific and a SE surface air flow
completes the cell.
In the winter
In the Winter whole system switches producing opposite
wind patterns as the pressure gradient is reversed. High
pressure over landmass due to cooling. Low pressure over
relatively warm SW Pacific. This creates surface NE winds
which blow across the Asian deserts
LOESS is
Fine grained wind blown sediment.
Tends to form un-stratified deposits which are unstable when wet.
As it is a wind blown deposit it is very well sorted
Biggest deposits are found
Biggest deposits are found in Loess Plateau in the Middle reaches of the Yellow River in Northern China. • Found in semi-arid zones of temperate China.
LOESS units were deposited when?
Loess units were deposited during extensive periods of cold,
dry winter monsoon winds driving dust from the north,
northwest, and west
