climate change Flashcards
what is adaptation?
responding to climate change by coming up of ways to live and cope with the effects
what are fossil fuels?
fuels made up of organic material for example coal, oil and gas
what are greenhouse gases?
gases in the Earth’s atmosphere that trap energy in the Earth’s system and contribute to the greenhouse effect
ice cores
a cylinder of ice extracted from an ice sheet or glacier which is used to analyse past environmental conditions
what is the greenhouse effect?
the greenhouse effect is a natural process for when the greenhouse gases trap the energy from the sun inside the Earth’s atmosphere, warming the Earth’s surface
human factors increasing global warming
-burning fossil fuels
-deforestation
-dumping waste in landfill-produces methane
natural factors increasing global warming
orbital changes:has natural warming and cooling periods caused by the Milankovitch cycles
volcanic activity:carbon dioxide is released by volcanoes erupting
Solar output - there can be fluctuations in the amount of radiation from the sun.
what are the milankovitch cycles?
the cyclical variations in the Earth’s orbits around the sun
what is mitigation?
means to reduce or prevent the effects of something from happening
what are examples of mitigation strategies?
carbon capture
effects of climate change
problems with water availability
loss of coastal areas
lower crop yields
more deaths due to heat
more extreme weather events
climate change mitigation strategies
planting trees
renewable energy production
evidence for climate change during the quaternary period
ice cores
pollen analysis
evidence from ocean sediments
