Climate change Flashcards
Name five greenhouse gases
Nitrous Oxide, Chlorofluorocarbons, Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Water Vapour
Describe how the greenhouse effect happens
1) infrared solar radiation from the sun enters the atmosphere and some is reflected back into space
2) the layer of greenhouse gases around the earth absorbs some of the heat
3) there are extra greenhouse gas molecules in the atmosphere created by humans which trap more of the heat in
Is the greenhouse effect a natural process
Yes
What is the difference between the greenhouse effect and the advanced greenhouse effect
The greenhouse effect is natural but the enhanced greenhouse effect is caused by manmade gases keeping more heat in the atmosphere
What is global warming
Where the global temperature of the earth rises; it is just one part of climate change
What is climate change
The change of a climate over a long period of time I.e. having more rain, wind or fluctuations in temperature.
Which country emits the most CO2
The USA (430,000 megatons of CO2)
How are the Philippines being affected by climate change
Sea levels rising (12.13mm per year) mean that they are having to raise their homes
What is happening in Tuvalu 🇹🇻
People are having to migrate away from it as it is a coral atoll, meaning that it is made from coral so the water can rise from all directions
What is happening in India, Somalia and California
Extreme heat has led to water and food shortages (water scarcity)
What is happening in Europe
Wildfires are running rampant, burning down national parks and agricultural land.
What is mitigation
Making the impacts less severe by addressing the root cause of the problem.
What is climate colonialism
Where developed countries negatively impact developing countries by damaging the environment
