Climate Change Flashcards
Weather
Refers to the state of the atmosphere at a particular time or place.
Solar Radiation
Different types of light interact differently with the atmosphere. All light is measured on a spectrum.
Climate
The long-term pattern of weather conditions in a particular area measured over the space of 30 months or more. scientists classify the climate of a certain place by studying two main features, temperature and precipitation.
Earths energy budget
Refers to the balance between the energy earths receives and the energy it radiates back.
Visible light
Colours that can be seen by the human eye. Is absorbed into earth and reflected light becomes infrared.
UV radiation
Invisible, causes sunburns/skin cancer/eye damage. Is absorbed into the mesospshere.
Infrared radiation
Felt as heat, is absorbed by both the troposphere and earth’s surface.
Albedo effect
Albedo refers to the amount of light a surface effects. Light surfaces have a high albedo (reflect more light.) Dark surfaces have a low albedo (absorb more light.)
Natural greenhouse effect
The atmosphere is made up of many greenhouses gases. Greenhouse gases absorb infrared radiation. More GHG higher climate.
Solar cycles
The amount of enerygt the sun produces to follw a pattern, there are times alot of energy is pruduced, solar maxium and times where not lot is produced, solar minimum. the wjole cycle lasts 11 years.
