climate change Flashcards
Weather?
the state of the air and atmosphere at a particular time and place
Climate
the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.
Bioclimate Profile
restricted to traditional climate variables such as temperature and precipitation
Greenhouse Effect
the process through which heat is trapped near Earth’s surface by substances known as ‘greenhouse gases.
Greenhouse Gases (names, rate, potency, natural and anthropogenic sources)
a gas that contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation, e.g., carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide
Heat Sink
a device or substance for absorbing excessive or unwanted heat.
Convection Current
a current in a fluid resulting from convection.
Albedo
the proportion of the incident light or radiation that is reflected by a surface, typically that of a planet or moon.
Proxy Record
preserved physical characteristics of the environment that can stand in for direct measurements
Anthropogenic
environmental change caused or influenced by people, either directly or indirectly
Carbon Source
A carbon source is a carbon-containing molecule that is used by an organism to synthesise biomass
Carbon Sink
a forest, ocean, or other natural environment viewed in terms of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Feedback Logo
a process that can work as part of a loop to either lessen or add to the effects of a change in one part of the system.
IPCC
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is an intergovernmental body of the United Nations. Its job is to advance scientific knowledge about climate change caused by human activities
Provincial and National Approaches to Climate Change
the Provincial Government has not stated any greenhouse gas emission reduction targets beyond 2030, whereas the Federal Government has committed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. standards to ensure large, industrial emitters are accountable for their greenhouse gas emissions.
