climate change Flashcards
what is palm oil ?
top selling , high use vegetable oil
palm oil crisis
many plants and animals are being converted on large scale palm oil farms ( contributes to deforestation)
loss of habitants for local tribes
use of excessive amounts of pesticides
when trees are cut off for palm oil plantations co2 is released which affects global warming
deforestation
permanent removal of trees to make room for something besides forest. As a result trees can no longer perform their critical function in carbon absorbtion increasing global warming
greenhouse effect
focuses trapping radiation and keeping our planet warm. if there is a lot of greenhouse gases in atmosphere, earth temperature increases but i there is fewer of these gases earth becomes cooler
anthropogenic
human activity
consequences of global temperature
- human
- carbon dioxide
- burning fossil fuels
- industry
- agriculture
- deforestation
- cooling effects of aerosols
methane
greenhouse gas 30 times stronger than carbon dioxide produced all by industrial operations + emitted by industrial waste such as food and wood
aerosols
reflect solar radiation allowing less sunlight to reach the earth global warming would be worse if aerosols didnt exist
mitigation
reducing climate chage : reducing flow of heat and trapping greenhouse gases onto atmosphere either by reducing sources of these gases
adaptation
adjusting to actual or expected future climate . goal is to reduce our vulnerability to the harmful effect of climate change
