Climate Change Flashcards
1
Q
How do volcanic eruptions cause climate change?
A
- During eruptions, carbon dioxide, water vapour, sulfur dioxide, dust and ash are released into atmosphere
- Sulfur dioxide reacts with water vapour to form sulphur-based particles i natmosphere
- Work with dust and ash to reflect solar energy into space
- Less sunlight reaches earth, temperature is lowered
2
Q
Describe how deforestation causes climate change
A
- Loss of forests due to clearance of trees for human purposes
- timber companies, commerical value of trees
- land needed for agriculture, commercial land, residentail areas
-loss of carbon lungs
- forests are carbon sinks absorbing and capturing carbon dioxide from atmosphere
- Deforestation: cutting down of trees, carbon dioxide is released into the air
3
Q
Describe how changing land use causes climate change
A
Agriculture:
-Global increase in meat consumption, increased livestock reared
E.g.
Argentina, one of the world’s largest beef producers
-methane gas from livestock makes up 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions
-widespread use of machines in agriculture, additional carbon dioxide
Industry:
- production of goods and services
- involves burning of fossil fuels, production of GHG as by-products
Urbanisatoin:
process where more people live in urban areas
-widespread use of fossil fuels for energy
-high concentration of vehicles, large ghg emissions
