climate change Flashcards
What is climate?
The usual pattern of weather in a region over a long period of time.
Gases within our atmosphere that absorb radiation. What type of radiation is this?
Infrared radiation
global warming:
the increase in global temperatures over a long period of time.
how does climate change affect humans
- rising sea levels
- changes in food production
- weather extremes
- poor air quality
- decline water supply
state two of the main greenhouse gasses associated with human activity
Carbon dioxide, methane
Explain how deforestation may affect global warming
Trees absorb carbon dioxide and therefor cutting down trees prevents future carbon from being absorbed
What are the four components of Earth’s climate system?
Atmosphere, Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, and Biosphere.
What are some human causes of climate change? Provide 2 examples.
Carbon dioxide emissions from cars and industries, cow farming producing methane, deforestation (emitting carbon dioxide), etc.
(Answers may vary)
What is some of the evidence proving climate change? Provide 2 examples.
Rising temperature, Melting glaciers, ice sheets and sea ice, rising sea level, etc.
(Answers may vary)
What is the relationship between Earth’s global temperature and the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere?
The more carbon dioxide there is in the atmosphere, the higher the global temperature is.
Examples of greenhouse gasses
water vapour, carbon dioxide, and methane
What are the five main climate zones?
tropical, dry, polar, moderate, continental
What is a feedback loop?
A process in which the result acts to influence the original
process
What is thermal energy?
the energy present
in the motion of particles at a particular
temperature
