Climate Flashcards
What is climate
State of atmosphere of an area over a long period of time, usually 30 years
How does climate affect Mass Movement
By indirectly setting up various condition for weathering processes to occur on the rock
What does climate consist of
Climate affects the amount of precipitation and temperature
How does precipitation play a role in influencing Mass Movement
Water affects both shear strength and shear stress of the slop
Small amount of water provides cohesion that help hold grain together while too large of a amount of water will reduce internal friction and cohesion of particles by saturation, decreasing shear strength
What happens to soil when saturated
When soil is saturated , pore water pressure forces particles apart, reducing friction, making it easier to mass movement
So what if there’s shear strength and shear stress
The combined effect of increasing shear stress and decreasing shear strength will cause Mass movement to occur overtime
What happens in tropical region
In tropical region there’s high precipitation and high temp , which leads to deep weathering . This means that there will be large amount of unconsolidated material , with mush lower internal friction and resistance between particles , thus more prone to mass movement on the slope
What happens in cold regions
Because rocks are susceptible to freeze thaw action , they are more likely to result in rock fall due to blockchains disintegration.
State 2 ways in which Climate affect slope
1.type of weathering processes acting on slope
2.amount of precipitation whereby prolong rainfall will saturate soil, increasing pore water pressure , causing slope failures
An example of Mass movement occurring due to climate
The mass movement that occured in antipolo city in Philippines called the cherryhill landslide that occured due to high rainfall caused by monsoon season. Which destroyed many buildings and killed more than 58 people
What can high rainfall cause
High rainfall caused by monsoon can lead to rapid movement of loose soil and rock fragments , on slope with lack of vegetation, which can cause mudflows.
