Clevedon Flashcards

Q

What is a qualitative data source used to investigate lived experience in Clevedon?

A

The poem ‘Pier without Peer’ which outlines the lived experience and social constructionist approach of Clevedon’s community after the collapse of its pier. The source provides details such as “That might’ve spelt the end” which demonstrates the profound impact in which Clevedon’s pier had in shaping the character and lived experience as a resident of Clevedon at that time.

Q

Explain why an outsiders perspective might give a different sense of place to an insider perspective

A

An outsider is someone who does not live in an area or does not feel a sense of belonging whereas an insider may have experience within a place and feels as though they belong. Their perspective may differ to an outsider as an insider is familiar with the day-to-day life in an area and has lived expeience where an outsider may not. An outsider may have an exaggerated or inaccurate perspective such as in NY which is described as a ‘dream city’ but is actually dirty and expensive. However an outsider may still live in an area but just doesn’t feel a sense of belonging

Q

How did Totnes resist globalisation? What happened in 2019?

A

2012 Costa wanted to open an outlet there, but 3/4 of residents said they would boycot it, to prevent Totnes becoming a clone town. However, later on in 2019 a different international brand opened a coffee shop there, suggesting becoming a clone town is inevitable.
