Q

filtering

A

The process of passing a mixture of a liquid and a solid slowly through paper or other porous substances in order to remove the solid from the mixture.

9
Q

gas

A

A state of matter in which the substance takes the shape of its container and is of low density compared to solids and liquids. Great expansion and contraction with changes in temperature and pressure.

10
Q

heterogeneous mixture

A

A mixture of varying composition; e.g. a mixture of soil and sand may have more of one component in one sample than in another sample of the same size taken from elsewhere in the mixture.

Q

homogeneous solution

A

A solution with uniform composition and properties throughout the solution. For example a cup of coffee, perfume, cough syrup, a solution of salt or sugar in water, etc.

13
Q

mixture

A

All of the atoms or molecules in a mixture may come from a variety of substances. A mixture is a number of pure substances brought together. In most cases the pure substances can be isolated by relatively simple procedures.

14
Q

physical change

A

A change in a substance where no new substances are formed though the substance; itself, takes on different characteristics; e.g. a solid becoming a liquid. Physical changes are reversible changes;
i.e. the substance can be returned to it s original state or recovered from a mixture.

16
Q

reactant

A

An element or compound that enters into a chemical reaction.

17
Q

saturated

A

Referring to a solution that is not able to hold anymore solute at that temperature.

18
Q

solid

A

A state of matter in which the substance has definite shape and volume.

19
Q

solute

A

The substance that is dissolved in a solution.

20
Q

solution

A

A homogeneous mixture in which the solute is uniformly distributed throughout the solvent.

21
Q

solvent

A

The substance that does the dissolving in a solution.

22
Q

suspension

A

A mixture in which very small particles of a solid remain suspended without dissolving.

23
Q

evaporation

A

A physical change from a liquid to a gas.

24
Q

crystal

A

A solid material with atoms and molecules that are arranged in a consistent repeating pattern, creating geometrical shapes. Salt, sugar, and snowflakes all contain crystals in solid form.

25
Q

surface tension

A

The property of the surface of a liquid that allows it to resist an external force, due to the cohesive nature of its molecules.

26
Q

evaporation

A

The process of turning from a liquid into a gas.

27
Q

dissolve

A

For a solid to become a part of a liquid so as to form a solution.

28
Q

chemical change

A

A change in substances that have reacted chemically. The original substance is changed to a new substance and cannot easily be recovered.

29
Q

soluble

A

Something that is able to be dissolved in a liquid (especially in water).

30
Q

indicator

A

Something that changes color at a specific pH value which can be used to monitor if a substance is an acid or a base. The indicators we looked at turned pink/red if acidic and blue/green if a base. Examples: China Rose, tumeric, litmus or purple cabbage.
