Classroom Chemistry - 1 & 2 Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A mixture results when the particles of one substance are mixed with those of another substance in any proportion.
What are some mixtures of solids?
Gold
Bacon & Eggs
Nuts & Bolts
Popcorn & Seasoning
What are some mixtures of a solid and a liquid?
Ice & Water
Diet Coke & Mentos
French Fries & Ketchup
Water & Corn Starch
What are some mixtures of liquids?
Milk & Chocolate Syrup
Oil & Gas
Rum & Coke
Tea & Honey
What are the two different types of mixtures?
Homogenous
Heterogeneous
What is the difference between homogenous and heterogenous mixtures?
Heterogeneous mixtures you can pick apart
Homogenous mixtures appear as one substance
What methods are used to separate mixtures?
Screening Filtering Magnets Evaporation Decanting Buoyancy Wind Separation
Screening
Using a sieve to separate solids from solids or solids from liquids.
Filtering
Is the process of passing a mixture of a liquid and a solid through paper in order to remove the solid from the liquid.
Magnets
Is the process of using a magnet to separate magnetic material from another solid.
Evaporation
The process of changing a liquid into a gas leaving the solid residue behind
Decanting
The process of pouring off the top layer without disturbing the layers that have settled over time.
Buoyancy
The process in which the solid/liquid floats to the top and can be skimmed off the liquid.
Wind Separation
The process in which lighter substances that moved by a light breeze and can be separated from heavier substances that fall straight down in the breeze.
