Classifying Shapes Flashcards
Define the word “attribute”.
A characteristic or component of a geometric figure.
What are the two main ways to describe a triangle?
By their side lengths, and by their angles.
Describe the attributes of a square.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with 4 right angles, 4 congruent sides, and 2 sets of parallel sides.
Describe the attributes of a triangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with 3 sides.
Describe the attributes of an equilateral triangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with 3 sides of equal length.
Describe the attributes of a scalene triangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with 3 sides of different lengths.
Describe the attributes of an isosceles triangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with AT LEAST 2 sides of congruent (equal) length.
Describe the attributes of an acute triangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with 3 sides AND 3 acute angles.
Describe the attributes of an obtuse triangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with 3 sides and one obtuse angle.
Describe the attributes of a right triangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional polygon with 3 sides and one right angle.
Describe a right angle.
An angle measuring exactly 90 degrees.
Describe an obtuse angle.
An angle measuring MORE THAN 90 degrees, but LESS THAN 180 degrees.
Describe an acute angle.
An angle measuring MORE THAN 0 degrees, but LESS THAN 90 degrees.
Define the word “quadrilateral”.
Any flat, 2-dimensional polygon with exactly 4 sides.
Define the word “polygon”.
A flat, 2-dimensional shape with STRAIGHT sides that connect to form a closed figure.
Describe the attributes of a parallelogram.
A flat, 2-dimensional quadrilateral with two pairs of parallel sides. The opposite sides are of equal length. The opposite angles are of equal measure.
Describe the attributes of a rhombus.
A flat, 2-dimensional quadrilateral with both pairs of opposite sides being parallel and all sides measuring the same length.
Describe the attributes of a square.
A flat, 2-dimensional quadrilateral with four EQUAL straight sides and four right angles.
Describe the attributes of a rectangle.
A flat, 2-dimensional quadrilateral with four straight sides and four right angles.
Describe the attributes of a trapezoid.
A flat, 2-dimensional quadrilateral with only one pair of parallel sides.
What is the “origin” on a coordinate plane?
The point located at (0, 0).
Is the X-AXIS the horizontal axis or the vertical axis?
The X-AXIS is the horizontal axis that goes side to side.
Is the Y-AXIS the horizontal axis or the vertical axis?
The Y-AXIS is the vertical axis that goes up and down.
In the coordinate pair (3, 5), which axis would I move along FIRST, and how far?
You would move 3 units to the right along the x-axis.
