Classifying Organisms Flashcards
What is a biological species?
Organisms that can reproduce and produce fertile offspring
What are some issues with the definition of a biological species?
Some species reproduce asexually
Viruses cannot reproduce on their own
Interspecific hybrids
What are the five kingdoms?
- Animals
- Plants
- Fungi
- Protists
- Monera
What are protista and monera?
Protista - slime, moulds, ciliates
Monera - bacteria, cyanobacteria
What is the binomial system?
A naming system used to classify organisms
Goes by genus then species
How does the Linnean classify organisms?
Using a hierarchy going by the order:
- Domain
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
What is phylogenetics?
The study of evolutionary history
What is symbiosis?
Relationship between two species where at least one benefits
What is symbiosis useful for?
Useful to classify organisms and aid in conservation efforts
What are the three types of symbiotic relationships?
Mutualism
Both partners benefit (+,+)
Commensalism
One partner benefits, other is unaffected (+, 0)
Parasitism
One partner benefits, other is harmed (+, -)
