CLASSIFYING MATTER Flashcards
What is matter?
Makes up everything
Matter is the substance of which physical objects are made.
Define mixture.
2+ types of substances can be physically separated
Mixtures can include solids, liquids, and gases.
What is a pure substance?
One type of substance, cannot be physically separated
Pure substances have consistent composition and properties.
What characterizes a heterogeneous mixture?
Mixed substances are visible like pizza
Heterogeneous mixtures have distinguishable components.
What characterizes a homogeneous mixture?
Mixed substances are not visible like tap water
Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition.
Define compound.
Can be chemically separated like salt
Compounds consist of two or more elements chemically bonded.
What is an element?
Is in its simplest form like Hydrogen
Elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
Give an example of a metal.
Aluminum (Al)
Metals are typically good conductors of heat and electricity.
Give an example of a non-metal.
Neon (Ne)
Non-metals are often poor conductors and can be gases at room temperature.
