Classifiers Types Flashcards
DCL examples
Descriptive Classifiers
Shape and design of abase, design on wallpaper, height width of a box, description of a clothing or items put on body.
Descriptive Classifier
DL
Referred to as a size and shape specifier or SASS. Used to describe the appearances of an object, eg the shape, size, texture, or pattern of an object. Usually produced with both hands for either symmetrical or asymmetrical shapes.
BPSASS
Body Part Size and Shape Shifter
Function similarly as DCL, but used to describe the shape, size, or texture of a body part.
BPSASS examples
Body Part Size and Shape Specifer
Shape and size of an elephant’s ears, the design of a parrot’s headdress, the shape of a person’s nose, the texture of a car’s fur, the design of a person’s hairstyle, size of s body’s cheeks.
BPCL
Body Part Classifier
Represents a specific part of the body doing the action. The hand shape represents the body part and is usually iconic (physically similar to the part)
BPCL examples
Body Part Classifier
An alligator’s mouth snapping, a horse’s ears moving, a person’s eyes darting back and forth, a person’s head resting on someone’s shoulder, toes wiggling, a person’s legs wading through mud.
LCL
Locative Classifier
Represents an object (or part of an object) being in a specific location and/or doing an action. The hand shape usually iconically represents the part or whole object. Usually one handshape is used LCL handshape are primarily: B/5, H, 1,C
LCL examples
Locative Classifier
A leaf drifting down, a door banging close, a cup tipping over, a cigarette dangling from mouth, a pencil flying through the air, a basketball hitting someone,s head.
SCL
Semantic Classifier
Functions similar to LCL in representing an object/person/animal in a specific location or in action, the difference is the hand shape always represents the WHOLE object/body is “abstract” and does not change firm. SCLs are usually limited to these handshakes ‘open A’, “sideway 3’, ‘upright 1’, ‘ILY’, “V’
SCL examples
Semantic Classifier
A case upon a shelf (A), A motorcycle jumping off a cliff (3) A drunk person going down the street (1) A plane landing (ILY) A person slipping on ice (V)
ICL
Instrument Classifier
Shows how one handles or manipulates an object. One group if ICLs shows the “hand(s)” handling the object.
Tool ICL
Tool Instrument Classifier
Represents the object but it indicates being handled
ICL examples
Instrument Classifier
Holding the handle of a pail, pulling out a drawer, using a hammer, ringing the doorbell, turning over a page, cleaning with a cloth
Tool ICL examples
Tool Instrument Classifier
Using a blow dryer, shooting with a gun, using a screwdriver.
BCL
Body Classifier
The upper part of the body becomes the classifier in which the upper body “enacts” the action, especially the arms. BCL is similar to ICL except BCL doesn’t show any handling or manipulating of something else. Role shifting is required with BCLs but not all role shifting are BCLs
BCL examples
Body Classifier
A person waving excitedly, a person crossing arms and pointing, person scratching head, person moving arms while running.
PCL
Plural Classifier
Indicates movement or location of a group of objects/persons/animals with a specific or non-specific number.
PCL examples
Plural Classifier
A long line of people slowly moving, three people walking across the street together, people sitting in an audience, a pile of logs.
ECL

ECL examples
Element Classifiers
Water dripping, lights blinking, steam coming out of a hole, blood coming out of a body, a candle flame, cigarette smoke coming out of mouth
Number/Letter classifier
Uses the letter(s) of the manual alphabet or number handshakes as a part of a description of an object.
Number/letter Classifier examples
Number and name on football jersey, logo on a baseball cap, logo on a store window, written word on a book
