Classifications Of Volcanoes Flashcards
Steep-sided, conical volcanoes formed by explosive eruptions of
ash, cinders, and dust. Has a wide crater and are the most abundant
of the three major volcano types.
Cinder Cone Volcano
Tall and large symmetrical volcanoes composed of layers of lava
flows and volcanic ash. They are formed from viscous, or sticky,
lava that does not flow easily
Composite Cone Volcano
Broad, gently sloping (not steep) volcanoes with a shape resembling
a warrior’s shield. They are formed from layers of cooled lava.
Shield Volcano
Volcanoes that have had at least one eruption during the past 10,000 years. They are those that erupted recently and still showing regular activity like emission of gases, lava, and ash flows.
Active Volcanoes
Volcanoes that have no records of volcanic activity but is capable of erupting in the future based on its geological history, seismic activity, or other volcanic features
Potentially Active
Volcanoes that have not erupted for the last 10,000 years but may still have the potential to erupt in the future. It might erupt again under the right conditions
Inactive Volcanoes (Dormant)
Volcanoes that are highly unlikely to erupt again because there is no longer any magma supply or significant geological activity beneath it. Has not erupted for millions of years, and there is little to no chance of future eruptions.
