classifications of epithelium Flashcards
simple squamous epithelium
purpose - filtration and diffusion
location:
covering serous membranes; pericardial, pleural, peritoneal, cavities
line inside of heart, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels
found in air sacs of lungs (alveoli), Bowman’s capsule of kidney, inner surface of airdrum
simple cuboidal epithelium
purpose - secretion and absorption location: pancreas ducts; part of kidney tubules; smaller ducts of many glands; s ecretory chambers of thyroid; anterior surface of lens; pigmented epithelium at posterior of retina
non-ciliated simple columnar epithelium
have microvilli and goblet cells function - secretion, lubrication, absorption location: lines gut mucosa from stomach to anus; ducts of many glands; gall bladder
ciliated simple columnar epithelium
goblet cells synchronous movement of cilia assists motility of mucous and foreign objects or oocytes; function - move materials location: some bronchioles; uterine fallopian tubes; sinuses; central canal of spinal cord; ventricles of brain
keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
located where mechanical or chemical stresses are severe; where dehydration and mechanical stress are an issue; protect against microbes
apical cells packed with keratin
- protects against abrasion, water loss, UV radiation, foreign invasion
located in superficial layer of skin
non-keratinised stratified squamous epithelium
protect against microbes;
lines wet surfaces, constantly moistened by mucous from salivary and mucous glands
location;
lining of mouth; oesophagus; vagina; part of epiglottis and pharynx; covers tongue
stratified cuboidal epithelium
function - protection and limited secretion and absorption
fairly rare
location:
ducts in adult sweat and oesophagal glands
part of male urethra
stratified columnar epithelium
function - protection and secretion uncommon location: lines part of urethra; large excretory ducts in some glands, eg. oesophagal glands; small areas in anal mucous membrane; part of conjunctiva of eye; pharynx
transitional epithelium
allows organ to stretch/expand and maintain protective lining without rupturing
lines urinary bladder and portions of ureters and urethra
ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium
goblet cells and cilia - mucous traps foreign particles, cilia sweep away
lines airways of upper respiratory tract
non-ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium
lacks cilia and goblet cells
functions in absorption and protection
lines epididymis, part of male urethra, larger ducts of many glands
