what is schizophrenia
a chronic disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. ‘split mind’
nature of schizophrenia
affects about 1 in 100 people
in men start late teens or early 20s
in women start late 20s
the course of the disorder
an episodic illness
starts with low mood/anxiety then specific symptoms
psychotic eps last from 1 to 6mnths or even a year
2/3 make substantial progress.
Depression frequently occurs together & between 10-15% commit suicide
what is an episodic illness
periods of psychotic disturbance interspersed with more normal functioning

impaired emotional responses
poor interpersonal skills and a distortion of reality

strongly held false beliefs
