Classification processes - Unit 3: Topic 1: Subtopic 2 Flashcards
What are the 8 taxas in the Linnaean system?
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species.
What are the methods of reproduction?
Asexual and sexual
Define Phylogenetic species classification process.
Analyses DNA for similarities of common ancestors.
Define Morphological Classification
Classification based on the physical features of an organism
Define hierarchical Classification
A system organising organisms into levels or orders based on their similarities (kind of like a triangle)
What are the limitations of Morphological classification?
Sexual Dimorphism, age and maturity, similar looking species
Define the biological species concept
A group of organisms that produce viable offspring.
Differentiate between The Molecular phylogeny classification system and the Linnaean classification system.
Linnaean Classification System is based on the Morphological features of an organism. Whilst the Molecular Phylogeny Classification System in based on the DNA sequencing of an organism.
what are the limitations of biological species concept?
Infertile species, Asexual reproduction, fossils, ring species
