Classification of wounds Flashcards
Define Intentional Wound
Wound created in a surgical and sterile
conditions
Define Unintentional Wound
Wound created by accident
Define Open Wound
Skin surface is broken
Define Closed Wound
Skin surface is intact; damage is beneath the skin surface
Define Acute Wound
Heals in weeks to days
Define Chronic Wound
Heals in months, maybe even years.
Factors that create an acute wound
Well approximated, created in surgical environment, well cared for, low infection risk
Factors that create a chronic wound
High infection risk, poor nutrition, immunocompromised, poor wound care, skin breakdown
Primary Intention
Wound is well approximated, little to no tissue loss, skin edges are close together
Secondary Intention
Not well approximated, some tissue loss, may need skin replacement, and wound may need to be slightly open
Tertiary Intention
Delayed closure; wound is open, either on purpose or on accident
Healing will take an extended amount of time

Wound complication: infection
Microbes enter wound and cause disease
Wound complication: dehiscence
Partial to total separation of wound due to pressure
Wound complication: evisceration
Wound opens and something begins to pop out
Wound complication: hemorrhage
Uncontrolled bleeding
Wound complication: fistula
