Classification of Pollutants and Sources; Legislation Flashcards
Primary Pollutant
Pollutant emitted directly from a source
Secondary Pollutant
Created in the atmosphere by reactions among primary pollutants
Criteria Pollutants - definition
7 main pollutants for NAAQS
NAAQS
National Ambient Air Quality Standards
Criteria Pollutants (list)
PM10, PM2.5, SO2, CO, NO2, Pb, Ozone
VOC - volatile organic compounds
Organic compounds with high vapor pressures. Interact in rxns that form ground level ozone
HAP - hazardous air pollutants
Specific compounds not within NAAQS but harmful to human health (ex: asbestos)
GHG - Greenhouse gases
Gases that trap heat in the atmosphere (CO2, CH4, fluorinated gases)
Ozone depleting gases
halogens - contribute to ozone destruction (CFC fluorocarbons)
Anthropogenic Sources
Created/Cased by human activities
Mobile Sources
not confined to one location (ex. vehicles)
Stationary Sources
confined to one location (consisting of facilities with industrial or combustion process)
Air emissions regulated by two ways - NAAQS, Source Performance Standards
- NAAQS - 7 targeted pollutants
2. Source Performance Standards - emissions of pollutants from specific sources (ex: mass emissions/unit time)
2 criteria for criteria pollutants
- endangers public health or welfare
2. presence in air is due to numerous mobile or stationary sources
NAAQS Primary Standard
Enforced, protects direct impact on human health
