What are the kinds of organisms that are found in the domain category?
Eukarya, Bacteria, Archaea
What is the Genus category?
A group that contains similar, closely related species. The first part in an organism’s binomial name.
What is the Species category?
A grouping of similar organisms that an mate with each other and produce offspring that can also reproduce. The second part of an organism’s name.
What is binomial nomenclature?
A system that creates, unique, two-part scientific names for organisms
Who designed the binomial nomenclature system?
Carolus Linnaeus
Who is Carolus LInnaeus?
A Swedish botanist who devised a system of naming organisms.
What is the proper format of a binomial name?
The Genus comes first and then the species. The first letter of the genus must be capitalized but the species can’t be capitalized. The entire binomial name must be italic. If the binomial name is being handwritten then underline it.
What is the proper format for cats’ binomial name if it’s Genus is Felis and it’s species is catus?
Felis catus
