Classification of Organisms Flashcards
- Characteristics of living things - Group living organisms found in a maned habitat based on observed similarities and differences. - Classify organisms into taxonomic groups based on physical similarities.
What is classification?
Categorizing something or someone into a certain group or system based on certain characteristics.
What is the plural of genus
Genera
State the meaning of binomial nomenclature.
This is a system in which species of animals or plants are given two names, the first one tells the genus that it belongs while the second tells the species.
What is an observation?
To notice or perceive something, while using your senses to give information on the thing.
What are the characteristics of Living Things?
GRIMNER Growth Respiration Irritability Movement Nutrition Excretion Reproduction
What is a habitat?
A place where an organism lives, their surrounding.
What are the five kingdoms?
- Prokaryotes
- Protoctists
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
A virus causes diseases such as…
- Smallpox
- Measles
- Aids
What are the two types of classification?
- Artificial
- Natural
What is the difference between Artificial and Natural classification?
Artificial classification is based on observed characteristics such as color, shape or number of legs etc. While natural classifications are based on internal and external characteristics, such as anatomy, behavior etc.
Carl Linnaeus came up with a system called________-that is used for naming species of organisms with a biological name.
Binomial system
Plural for phylum
Phyla
The flowering plants have true flowers and make so seeds. They are also called ____________ and are divided into two groups:
- _______________
- _______________
- Angiosperms
- Monocotelydons
- Dicotelydons
There are five types of vertebrates:
- Fish
- Amphibians
- Reptiles
- Birds
- Mammals
Name the protozoan that performs all bodily functions such as excretion etc.
Amoeba
Escherichia coli is a part of what Kingdom?
Prokaryote
What type of prokaryote is Escherichia Coli?
Bacteria
Name the bacteria that can be found in the intestines of humans and animals, that helps to digest food.
Escherichia coli
According to Carl Linnaeous’ system, the Binomial System, how would shorten
- Escherichia coli
- Eryngium foetidum
E. coli
E. foetidum
Define microscopic
So small, it can’t be seen with the naked eye, but can be seen with a microscope.
Unicellular organisms are made up of how many cells?
Unicellular means it is made up of one cell.
What does monocotyledon mean?
Made up of one seed leaf
Describe the leaf of a monocotyledon plant and give an example.
It has parallel veins
Eg. Corn, grass
What does dicotyledon mean?
Made up of two seed leaves
Describe the leaves of a dicotyledon plant and give an example.
They have net-like or branching veins
Eg. hibiscus, roses, sunflowers, dandelions
N.B- Angiosperms are also dicotyledons.
What are angiosperms?
Plants that produce flowers and bear their seeds in the fruit.
Give an example of an invertebrate that lives on land and one that lives in water.
Snail
Sea cucumber
Give the three examples of Anthropods.
1. Crustaceans Crabs, shrimp, lobsters 2. Arachnids Scorpions, spiders, mites, ticks 3. Insects Bees, ants, fleas, locusts
Characteristics of Anthropods
They all have an exoskeleton and jointed limbs
Characteristics of Molluscs
They have a soft body that is often covered by a shell.
Examples of Molluscs
Snail, slugs, octopus, squid, clam, oysters, conch.
Characteristics of chordates
They have a vertebral column
Examples of chordates.
Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals
Name the five groups of vertebrates.
Fish Amphibians Reptiles Birds Mammals
Organisms can be classified according to similarities in their ____________ __________________
Visual Characteristics
Examples of Visual characteristics
Organisms with legs eg. spiders
Organisms with antennas eg. ants, insects
Organisms with segmented abdomens eg. ants, bees
Give an example of a prokaryote.
Bacteria
Give an example of Protoctists
Algae, protozoa
Give an example of Fungi
Mould, yeasts, mushroom
Give an example of Plantae
Mosses, ferns, conifers, flowering plants
Give an example of Animalia
Invertebrates, vertebrates
Why do we classify organisms?
For easy identification on a global scale, and for when biologists are studying.
