Classification of numbers Flashcards
Student will be able to identify the different types of numbers
In what three main number sets?
Real, Imaginary and Complex Numbers
Numbers used for counting, which contain the set of positive integers from 1 to infinity.
Natural Numbers
The set consists of non-negative integers, where it does not contain any decimal or fractional part.
Whole Numbers
All positive and negative whole numbers.
Integers
All real numbers which can be expressed as a fraction, p/q, where p and q are integers and q≠0
.
Rational Numbers
All real numbers which can’t be expressed as a fraction whose numerator and denominator are integers (i.e. all real numbers which aren’t rational); for example, √2, π
Irrational Numbers
Includes all numbers on the number line.
Real Numbers
Numbers whose squares are negative. They are the square root of minus one, i = √−1, and all real number multiples of i, such as 2i and i√2.
Imaginary Numbers
Have the form z = x + iy, where x and y are real numbers. x is called the real part and y is called the imaginary part
Complex Numbers
N = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ……….}
Natural Numbers
W = {0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ……….}
Whole Numbers
Z = {-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3}
Integers
R = ¾, 0.333, √2, 0, -10, 20, etc.
Real Numbers
Q = 7/1, 10/2, 1/1, 3/5, etc
Rational Numbers
√2, π, Euler’s constant, etc
Irrational Numbers
