Classification of Neurons Flashcards
Multipolar Neurons
Several dendrites and one axon
Bipolar Neurons
One main dendrite and one Axon
Unipolar Neuron
Dendrites and one axon that are fused together to form a continuous process that emerges from the cell body.
Pseudo unipolar Neurons
Begin in the embryo as bipolar neurons
Sensory Receptors
Detect a sensory stimulus such as touch, pressure, pain or thermal stimuli.
How did the Pyramidal Cell get their name?
Named for the histologist who first described the, or for an aspect of their shape or appearance.
Purkinje Cells
In the Cerebellum
Pyramidal Cells
Found in the Cerebral Cortex of the brain which have pyramid shaped cell bodies.
Functional Classifications
Neurons classified according to the direction in which the nerve impulse (action Potential) is conveyed with respect to the CNS
Sensory Neurons
Either contain sensory receptors at their distal ends or are located just after sensory receptors that are separate cells
Unipolar in structure
Motor Neurons
Convey action potential away from the CNS to effectors to periphery through cranial or spinal nerves.
Multipolar in structure
Effectors
Muscles and glands
Interneurons
Located within the CNS between sensory and motor neurons.
