Classification of maxillary major connectors Flashcards
1
Q
Single palatal bar major connector
A
Indications
Class I partially edentulous arches with the residual ridges that have undergone little vertical resorption
V- or U-shaped palates
Strong abutments
Noninterfering tori
Disadvantages
* Too thick
* Limited to replace one or twoteeth on each side of the arch
* Should not be placed anteriorlyto the second premolar as itinterferes with the tonguemovements

Q
Indications for maxillary major connectors
A
- If the periodontal support of remaining teeth is weak, more of thepalate should be covered thus a wide palatal strap or a complete palateis indicated.
- If the remaining teeth have adequate periodontal support and littleadditional support is needed, a palatal strap and double palatal bar canbe used.
- For long-span distal extension bases where rigidity is critical, a closedhorseshoe or complete palate is indicated
- When anterior teeth must be replaced, a horseshoe, closed horseshoe ora complete palate may be used. The final selection is based onmodifying factors such as number and location of posterior teethmissing, support of remaining teeth and type opposing occlusion.
- If the torus is present and is not removed, a horseshoe, a closedhorseshoe or an anterior posterior palatal bar may be used.
- A single palatal bar is rarely indicated.
