Classification of Matter Flashcards
Describe matter.
Property
A characteristic that allows us to recognize a particular type of matter and to distinguish it from other types.
Physical property
A property that can be observe without changing the identity and composition of the substance.
Chemical property
A property that describes the way a substance may change, or react, to form other substances.
State
Form of matter (solid, liquid, or gas).
Physical change
A change in which a substance changes its physical appearance but not its composition; the bonding of the atoms to one another does not change and so no new substances are formed.
Chemical change
A change in which a substance is transformed into a chemically different substance by the rearrangement of its atoms.
Limiting reactant
Substance that is completely consumed in an equation. When it is used up the reaction stop.
Formula weight
Sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in its formula.
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element that differ in mass number.
Heterogenous
Not having the same properties everywhere; different in different parts.
Phase
Homogenous matter; part of a system that is homogenous.
Solution
A liquid or solid phase containing more than one substance; a homogenous mixture.
Dissolve
Two (originally heterogenous) phases that mix to form a new homogenous phase.
Phase symbol
(s) - solid
(l) - liquid
(g) - gas
(aq) - dissolved in water
Solvent
The part of a solution that there is more of.
