Classification of Matter Flashcards
Matter
Anything that has mass and volume.
Mass
Mass is anything that has matter.
Element
A substance that has all atoms of the same identity
Compounds
. A substance in which there are 2 or more atoms that are combined in fixed proportions
Mixture
Mixtures are made up of two or more substance that can be separated
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished You can tell the substances apart without a microscope.
Homogeneous Mixture
A mixture in which two or more gaseous, liquid, or solid substances are blended evenly
Physical Properties
A Physical Properties is any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the substances.
Physical Change
A physical change is a change in size, shape, or state of matter for an object
Chemical Properties
Chemical Properties are characteristics of a substance that indicates it can change chemically
Chemical Change
Chemical change is a change of one substance into another
solution
A homogenous mixture of particles so small they cannot be seen with a microscope and do not settle. They remain mixed
Suspension
A heterogeneous mixture in which visible particles settle
Adhesion
Adhesion is the ability to stick to other surfaces. Water also has the property of adhesion
Cohesive
Cohesive is the ability to stick to itself
