Classification of Matter Flashcards
Substance made of atoms that are all alike
Element
Two or more elements that are chemically combined and cannot be separated by physical means
Compound
Two or more substances that are only physically mixed together and can be easily separated
Mixture
Mixture that remains constantly and uniformly mixed and has particles so small they cannot be seen with a microscope. Also called a solution
Homogeneous Mixture
All substances in the mixture are distinguishable
Heterogeneous Mixture
Are a heterogeneous mixture that is made up of liquid and solid parts that will settle out if left undisturbed
Suspension
Are heterogeneous mixtures containing water, fat, and proteins that never settle out of the mixture
Colloid
Any characteristic of material/substance
color, shape, size, density, melting point, boiling point, state of matter
Physical Properties
capability of being shaped or extended by hammering, forging, etc
Malleability
the degree to which a materiel can sustain deformation under tensile stress before failure
Ductility
mass is not created nor destroyed, it is conserved in any physical or chemical reaction
Law of Conservation of Mass
ability to scatter light
Tyndall Effect
solidification of atoms or molecules into a highly structured form called crystal (water to ice cubes or snow)
Crystallization
process of separating components of a mixture based on different boiling points (Purification of alcohol)
Distillation
conversion of a substance from the solid to the gaseous state without it becoming liquid (dry ice exposed to room temperature)
Sublimation
