Classification of Joints Flashcards
Fibrous Joints
- little permissible movement
- joined by fibrous connective tissue
- e.g.: sutures of the skull
Cartilaginous Joints / Synchondroses
TWO TYPES: Hyaline & Fibrocartilage
Hyaline
Primary joint
- when a bar of hyaline cartilage joins two bones
- e.g.: joint between the ribs and sternum
Epiphysyeal Plates are examples of…
hyaline joints
Fibrocartilage
Secondary Joints
-e.g.:intervertebral discs of vertebral column
Synovial Joints
provide free and easy movement
Articular Cartilage
feature of synovial joint
- hyaline cartilage
- smooth and friction free
Synovial Membrane + Fluid
also known as synovial capsule
- reates joint space
- secretes synovial fluid, lubricates cartilage covered surfaces
Fibrous Capsule
provides stability to joint
-located superficially to synovial capsule, made of dense connective tissue
Ligaments (function of)
- restrict movement around joint
- connect bone to bone
Discs
- shock absorber
- aligns bony surfaces
- allows for complex movement
- example: dics in acromioclavicular joint
Uni-Axial Joint
only moves in one plane
- hinge: elbow, knee
- pivot: proximal radioulnar joint
Bi-Axial Joint
move in two planes
-knuckles and wrist
Multi Axial Joint
most mobile and easily damaged joints, permits movement in all directions
Ball + Socket
multi axial joint
-hip and shoulder joint
