Classification of carbohydrates Flashcards
Carbohydrates are classified on the basis of their behaviour on hydrolysis as
Monosaccharides, oligosaccharides and plysaccharides
Define monosachharide
A carbohydrate that cannot be hydrolysed further to give simpler polyhydroxy aldehyde / ketone.
Examples of monosaccharide?
Glucose, fructose, ribose etc
What are oligosaccharides?
Carbohydrate that yield 2-10 units of monosaccharides
What are the further classification of oligosaccharides?
Disaccharides, trisacchairdes, tetrasaccharides, depending upon the no of monosachharide units they produce on hydrolysis
Give example of disaccharides and its monosaccharide unit
Sucrose——> glucose + fructose
Give example of disaccharides and its monosaccharide unit
Maltose—-> 2 molecules of only glucose
What are polysaccharides?
carbs yielding a large number of monosacchairde units. Ex– starch, cellulose, glycogen
Other name of polysacchairdes
Non-sugars, as they are not sweet in taste
All carbs which reduce fehlings and tollen solution is called
Reducing sugard
All monosacchairdes are reducing sugars. T/F
