Classification of bacteria Flashcards
Gram positive stain and shape
Violet/ blue stain. Cocci shape. (spheres)
Staphylococcus aureus: Gram-positive cocci that form grape-like clusters.
Streptococcus pneumoniae: Gram-positive cocci that form chains.
Bacillus anthracis: Gram-positive, spore-forming bacilli that are rod-shaped and may form chains.
Clostridium tetani: Gram-positive, spore-forming bacilli that are rod-shaped and may form chains.
Lactobacillus acidophilus: Gram-positive bacilli that are rod-shaped and may form chains.
Corynebacterium diphtheriae: Gram-positive bacilli that are club-shaped and may form palisades.
Gram negative stain and shape
Pink/Red stain. Spiral shape, sphere, rods.
Escherichia coli: Gram-negative bacilli that are rod-shaped and may form short chains.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa: Gram-negative bacilli that are rod-shaped and may form chains. They can also be motile with a single polar flagellum.
Neisseria gonorrhoeae: Gram-negative cocci that occur in pairs (diplococci).
Vibrio cholerae: Gram-negative curved or comma-shaped bacilli.
Helicobacter pylori: Gram-negative spirilla that are helical or curved shaped.
