Classification And Types Of Volcanoes Flashcards
Erupted within historical times (within the last 600 years) / erupted recently and still showing regular activity like emission of gases and ash flows
Active Volcano
Morphologically young looking but no historical records of eruption
Potentially active
Have no record of eruption and no sighs of volcanic activity for a long period of time
Inactive volcano
Tall, symmetrical and steep sides
• Eruptions are dangerous, with many layers of lava and pyroclastic materials.
STRATOVOLCANO
They are larger than cinder cones, rising up to 8000 feet (2,438 meters).
STRATOVOLCANO
This is (composite) volcanoes because they are built of layers of alternating lava flow, ash and blocks of unmelted stone
STRATOVOLCANO
Not high and have a very broad shape with almost no slope. Flat rounded shapes
These volcanoes are built almost entirely of fluid lava flow thus these volcanoes are not steep.
Shield volcano
Are tall and broad with flat, rounded shapes. They have low slopes and almost always have large craters at their summits
Shield volcano
Circular or oval cones with almost vertical slope, wide crater. Most abundant major volcano type
Cinder cone volcano
Are fairly small, generally only about 300 feet (366 meters.)
